玄人志向GW2.5OR-U3を買った
2.5inch SATA HDD/SSDをUSB接続するケースとして玄人志向のGW2.5OR-U3を購入しました。
この類の製品に個人的には特に拘りは無いので安価なら中華製品も選択しますが、私が購入した時点(2022/1)ではAmazon.co.jpで中華製品を凌駕して最安値っぽかったのでこれを選択しました*1。レビューを見るとあまり好評では無さそうなんですが、枯れたジャンルの製品で玄人志向(バッファロー)がわざわざ問題のある製品を発売するとは考えにくいので*2。
手元にあるWesternDigitalのWD7500BPVTという2.5inch HDDを装着し、Ubuntu20.04環境で動作確認して判った情報を紹介します。
中身
ごく普通にASMediaのASM1051EをUSB-SATA変換ブリッジに使用しているようです。

※内部に装着したWD7500BPVTの仕様がSATA 3Gbpsで、GW2.5OR-U3(というかASM1051E)自体はSATA 6Gbpsに対応しています。
雑感
以下主観評価です。
パッケージや紙説明書の雰囲気から察するに、中華製品のOEMっぽい雰囲気はあります。筐体は特に高級感も安っぽくもない樹脂製ですが単なるコモディティ製品なので必要十分かと思います。発熱が多いHDD/SSDを使用する場合はアルミ筐体など放熱性に配慮されたケースを使用した方が良いかもしれません*3が、NASに繋いで24時間常時稼働のような運用ではなく、バックアップ・アーカイブ用にアドホックにUSB接続して使用するようなユースケースなら特に問題も無いでしょう。
長期使用時の耐久性などはまだ判りませんが、枯れた製品ジャンルなので特に問題ないのではないかと想像しています。Amazon.co.jpのレビューの評判の悪さは謎ですが、初期不良などに遭遇しなければコストパフォーマンス最高の良品だと思います*4。
